Have you got an idea for a product and thought, “I love this idea…” but then felt stuck on what to do next?
You’re not alone. So many brilliant ideas never make it past the sketchbook stage, not because they’re not brilliant ideas, but because product development can feel overwhelming at best and terrifying at worst!
The good news is you don’t have to tackle it alone. Whether you’re dreaming up a new homeware range, a kidswear collection or a set of beautifully designed stationery, this guide will walk you through the steps to turn that awesome idea into something real AND sellable.
Let’s break it down together.
1. Start with the Spark
Every great product starts with an idea – for me it’s when I’m out walking, but for you it may be in the shower, whilst you’re driving, and sometimes even scribbled on a napkin. I try not to overthink it – if it excites me, it’s worth exploring.
Start by asking yourself:
- Who is this product for?
- What problem does it solve?
- Is it fun, practical or both?
I start by writing a short sentence that sums it up. For example, “I want to create a fun but practical journal for brides, planning their wedding day”
I write or print it out and stick it on my wall – this becomes my focus, my north star.
2. Gather Inspiration
Once the idea feels right (seeing it written down and in a place that I can easily glance at really helps), I start by gathering visuals. Pinterest is my go-to for this stage. I love creating a private board (so your idea isn’t cloned!) and then going a little crazy pinning! I also look at magazines, mood boards, books in my studio, local library and pictures on my phone – there are so many places that can feed your ideas if you’re open to it.
This stage is about building a picture of what your product could look and feel like. Notice what colours you’re drawn to, what materials you like and patterns that make you smile. Look at what’s already out there – are there any gaps your product could fill?
This is when I love to step in and help. I thrive on helping clients with mood boards (arguably my favourite job!), colour palettes and pattern direction – giving them the ability to move forward with clarity.
3. Bring It to Life Visually
This is the part where your product starts to take shape. Even rough sketches can help. Once you’ve pinpointed your audience and general look, it’s time to explore how it could actually look.
You’ll want:
- A rough layout or product shape/style
- Initial patterns or illustrations
- A feel for colours and finishes
At Ivy Lemon Studio, we specialise in bringing products to life through surface pattern and product design. We work closely with clients to make sure every stripe, dot, flower and doodle reflects your brand and your vision.
4. Find the Right Materials and Test Your Ideas
Now comes the practical phase of the project. You’ll need to think about:
- What materials do you want to use (organic cotton, bamboo, recycled card?)
- How will it be made (printing, embroidery, laser cutting?)
- Who will make it (manufacturer, local maker, international company?)
This is the point where sampling and prototypes come in. Getting a physical sample can save a lot of stress (and heartache!), and helps you get a clear idea on finishes, scale and overall feel.
We help many of our clients source samples and can recommend production partners if needed.
5. Final touches – Production Ready
Once your samples feel right, it’s time to get everything production-ready. This is another favourite of mine as it really feels like things are becoming real at this point. This means:
- Finalising all artwork and pattern files
- Creating a product spec or “tech pack”
- Making sure everything is clear for the manufacturer
5. Launch Day
You don’t need a huge launch. Many of our clients start small: pre-orders, a limited run on Etsy a few local stockists or even a launch on Instagram or TikTok.
No matter how you launch, it’s your product. YOU made it happen.
We can also help with extra mock ups – a super economical way to create extra assets to help your product sell. We are here to support you in whatever way you need. Your success drives our business.
